Elon Musk issues a warning for 'AI neoclouds' as SpaceX borrows $40 billion for chips

Elon Musk issues a warning for 'AI neoclouds' as SpaceX borrows $40 billion for chips
Summary
  • SpaceX has raised $40 billion in callable debt to buy GPUs, leveraging its strong credit rating and revenue from Starlink and rocket launches.
  • Elon Musk said debt markets have largely closed to companies without substantial revenue beyond AI data centers, and he predicted that more than 200 “neocloud” providers will consolidate into a few survivors.

Nasdaq-listed SpaceX SPCX$147.44·Market Closed has raised $40 billion in debt to buy GPUs, the powerful processors used to run artificial-intelligence systems.

Elon Musk announced that on X with a warning for neoclouds, or companies whose revenues depend almost entirely on data centers, that may add to AI jitters on Wall Street and risk aversion in broader financial markets, including cryptocurrencies.

The $40 billion deal is mainly callable debt, meaning SpaceX can repay it early. The money could be used to pay for GPU deliveries expected in the first half of 2027, though Musk did not explicitly say so. Reuters previously reported that SpaceX was negotiating with banks and asset managers to raise $40 billion to buy Nvidia AI chips.

Musk said the reason SpaceX could borrow the money is because it has a strong credit rating and steady revenue from Starlink internet service and rocket launches. Those businesses do not depend on AI data centers, making it easier for SpaceX to secure chip financing than for companies that rely entirely on data centers for revenue. Debt funding for such firms is drying up, Musk noted.

“As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers,” he said on X.

Musk predicted that more than 200 “neoclouds” — newer companies that rent out AI computing power — will consolidate, with only a few surviving.

The episode shows how costly the AI computing race has become. Building large clusters of AI chips can require tens of billions of dollars. Companies with diverse revenue and strong credit can still borrow; firms whose entire business depends on AI infrastructure face a tougher time as lenders become more selective.

Palihapitiya had earlier said many neoclouds appear poorly funded and badly run. He argued that Amazon, Microsoft and Google are moving slowly on deals and prefer to keep computing power for their own use. Delays in building data centers, he said, could leave many chips and half-finished projects sitting idle or failing to earn enough to cover their financing costs in 2027.

Lately, financial markets have become increasingly worried about the payoff from massive AI spending. That has pressured AI-linked stocks and the broader market. Nasdaq futures traded near 29,080 as of this writing, down sharply from above 30,000 early this month.
